Product Capabilities Snapshot

On-Server WebP & AVIF Image Compression Engine

Convert JPEG, PNG, and GIF media library uploads to high-density WebP and AVIF formats in-process on your own server, deliver standard HTML5 <picture> elements, and eliminate third-party cloud image subscriptions.

WebP & AVIF

Modern Next-Gen Formats

Converts JPEG, PNG, and GIF images locally into WebP via PHP GD or ImageMagick, with commercial AVIF support provided in Pro for up to 50% smaller files.

Non-Destructive

100% Original Safety

Original high-resolution uploads remain untouched on disk; converted files are written as companion .webp and .avif assets alongside.

Negative Guard

Zero Size Regressions

Automatically discards converted files if output size is equal to or larger than original assets, preventing unexpected file size bloat.

Zero Cloud APIs

100% On-Server Privacy

All image processing runs in-process on your WordPress host; zero external image data transmission, zero SaaS outages, and zero monthly conversion limits.

Why On-Server Image Optimization Matters

Faster page loads without recurring SaaS image bills or cloud dependencies

Heavy image payloads slow down Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and waste mobile bandwidth. Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer generates modern formats directly on your WordPress server.

1. In-Process Server Conversion

Many image optimization plugins charge per-image monthly fees and route private assets through third-party cloud SaaS infrastructure. Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer executes all conversions in-process on your own web server via native PHP extensions (ext-gd or ext-imagick) with zero monthly conversion caps.

2. Standards-Compliant <picture> Delivery

Rewrites content images and responsive thumbnail matrices to clean HTML5 <picture> elements with prioritized MIME types. Browsers that support modern formats receive ultra-compact WebP or AVIF streams, while older clients seamlessly receive the original image file.

3. Non-Destructive Companion Architecture

Master uploads are never overwritten or altered. Converted assets are generated alongside originals with appended extensions (such as photo.jpg.webp and photo.jpg.avif). Deactivating or uninstalling the plugin leaves your master media files 100% intact.

Operational Workflow

How Image Optimization Works

A four-stage processing pipeline engineered for high visual fidelity, execution safety, and zero frontend layout shift.

1

DETECT

Monitors uploads, validates mime types and magic bytes, and registers thumbnail dimensions.

2

CONVERT

Encodes WebP and AVIF in-process using PHP GD or ImageMagick with configured quality parameters.

3

GUARD

Compares output bytes; discards conversions larger than originals and writes valid companions atomically.

4

DELIVER

Serves responsive HTML5 <picture> elements on page render with native fallback to master files.

Technical Architecture

Engineered for Performance, Preservation & Privacy

Every conversion subsystem is designed to optimize media assets safely without breaking layout constraints or modifying master uploads.

Pillar 1 Engine

In-Process Local Conversion Engine

Does image processing run locally on the WordPress server?

Employs local graphics libraries (ext-gd or ext-imagick) to encode WebP and AVIF without cloud API latency or third-party quotas.

  • In-memory stream processing with configurable compression quality targets
  • Automatic adapter fallback between PHP GD and ImageMagick extensions
  • Animated GIF safety skipping to preserve multi-frame animation integrity
  • Zero external network roundtrips or third-party image processing latency
Pillar 2 Preservation

Non-Destructive Companion Architecture

Are original high-resolution uploads modified or deleted?

Retains master uploads in their original form and writes converted formats as companion files alongside original media.

  • Preserves photo.jpg unmodified while creating photo.jpg.webp and photo.jpg.avif
  • Companion file cleanup synchronized to native WordPress attachment deletion hooks
  • Safe uninstallation leaving master media library assets completely intact
  • Atomic file writes with temporary scratch naming and path constraint checks
Pillar 3 Guard

Smart Negative Compression Guard

What happens when converted files are larger than originals?

Automatically detects and discards conversions that exceed original file size to prevent performance regressions.

  • Pre-write byte comparison preventing larger output assets from being stored or served
  • Protects small or pre-optimized PNG graphics from file size bloat
  • Continues serving original asset seamlessly without errors or broken links
  • Logs skipped items with structured status codes to the admin dashboard
Pillar 4 Delivery

HTML5 <picture> Delivery & Fallback

How are modern image formats delivered to diverse browsers?

Dynamic the_content and post thumbnail filter rewriting to standards-compliant HTML5 <picture> tags.

  • Generates nested <source type="image/avif"> and <source type="image/webp"> elements
  • Fallback <img> tag points directly to the original master asset
  • Preserves intrinsic dimensions (width & height) to eliminate layout shift (CLS)
  • Full compatibility with responsive srcset and sizes attributes
Pillar 5 Batching

Scheduled WP-Cron Background Batching

Can large media libraries with thousands of images be optimized safely?

Non-blocking asynchronous conversion queue running under scheduled WordPress background events.

  • Chunked batch execution preventing PHP memory exhaustion and gateway timeouts
  • Isolated error tracking with structured failure codes for unreadable media
  • Automatic resumption on failure without duplicate or redundant processing
  • Admin bulk optimizer interface with real-time progress indicators
Pillar 6 Telemetry

Visual Difference Slider & Storage Metrics

Can administrators inspect compression fidelity visually?

In-admin split-screen visual comparison tool and sitewide optimization telemetry dashboard.

  • Interactive before-and-after split view slider for visual quality verification
  • Real-time sitewide storage savings metrics across JPEG, PNG, and GIF libraries
  • Format distribution breakdown comparing original vs WebP vs AVIF storage
  • Environment diagnostics inspector checking PHP extensions and memory constraints

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer?
Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer is a WordPress plugin that converts JPEG, PNG, and GIF images in your media library to WebP. Conversion runs on your own web server using PHP GD or ImageMagick. Converted files are written next to the originals and served through a standard HTML picture element, so browsers that do not support WebP still receive the original image.
What is the difference between the free plugin and Pro?
The free plugin performs WebP conversion and can be used on its own. Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer Pro is a separate add-on that requires the free plugin to be installed and active; it adds AVIF conversion and in-dashboard updates under an annual per-site licence. Pro is not a standalone product and does nothing without the free plugin.
Does the plugin convert images to AVIF?
AVIF conversion requires the Pro add-on. The free plugin contains no AVIF encoder. AVIF also requires PHP 8.1 or later with AVIF support compiled into GD, or ImageMagick with an AVIF delegate. On hosting without that support, AVIF is skipped and WebP conversion continues normally.
Are my images uploaded to an external service?
No. All image processing happens on your own server through PHP GD or ImageMagick. The free plugin makes no outbound network requests at all. The Pro add-on contacts the licence server only when an administrator activates or revalidates a licence, or when checking for plugin updates; it sends the licence key, an installation identifier, the site domain, and the installed version. No image data is ever transmitted.
What happens to my original images?
Originals are preserved and never modified. The converted file uses an appended extension, so photo.jpg produces photo.jpg.webp as a separate companion file. Converted files are removed only when WordPress itself deletes the attachment, and uninstalling the plugin does not touch your media files.
What happens if the converted image is larger than the original?
It is discarded. The plugin compares the converted file against the original before the file is moved into place, and if the converted version is the same size or larger it is deleted and the original continues to be served. This commonly happens with small or already-optimised PNG graphics.
What happens when a conversion fails?
The original image is left untouched and the failure is recorded in a failed-conversion list in the admin screen with an error code, such as an unreadable file, an unsupported format, or an image that exceeds the size guard. Animated GIFs are deliberately skipped so their animation is not destroyed. One failed image never stops a bulk run.
What are the server requirements?
WordPress 5.8 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, with either the GD extension or ImageMagick available and built with WebP support. The plugin includes a diagnostics screen that checks your PHP version, memory limit, maximum execution time, GD and ImageMagick capabilities, and uploads directory permissions, and produces a support report you can copy.
How much does Pro cost and what does a licence cover?
Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer Pro is priced at ₹850 per year ($10/year). One licence covers 1 production site plus up to 5 staging or development sites, which are detected automatically. The licence runs for 365 days and includes in-dashboard automated updates and direct support. You can purchase Pro directly at https://license.ankitrawat.com/checkout.
Is Hridyaa Image Compressor and Optimizer available on WordPress.org?
The plugin is currently distributed directly by the developer and is not yet published on the WordPress.org plugin directory (currently under review). You can get the Pro edition directly through the customer checkout portal.
